Air fryers are the kitchen gadget of the decade, and the big claim is that they cost far less to run than your oven. The honest answer: it depends on the wattage, the cook time and how much food you can fit in. Work out the real electricity cost of both below.
Your electricity and cooking habits
Check your latest bill for the exact unit rate - most UK households pay roughly 25p to 28p per kWh including VAT.
Air fryer
Compact models are 800-1200W, standard baskets 1400-1600W and dual-zone ones up to 2400W. Check the rating plate underneath.
Oven
Ovens cycle on and off once they are up to temperature, so the real draw is lower than the plate rating over long cooks - and remember to include the preheat. Fan ovens usually need 10-15 minutes less than conventional ones.

Tip: Running cost is only half the story. A decent air fryer costs £50 to £150 to buy, so if it replaces most of your oven cooking it typically pays for itself within two years. It shines for one or two portions; the oven stays cheaper for a full Sunday roast, and the microwave still beats both for reheating.
