Cheesy Bean Toastie
Sometimes the best meals are the simplest ones. A proper cheese and bean toastie costs 70p a portion and hits every comfort food button going. This is not complicated cooking – it is about getting the basics right. Good bread, plenty of cheese, and beans that are hot enough to melt everything together. If you are using a sandwich toaster, the sealed edges keep all the filling inside where it belongs.
Cheesy Bean Toastie
Ingredients
Method
- Heat the beans gently in a small saucepan over low heat.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place two slices butter-side down in a sandwich toaster or frying pan.
- Spoon the hot beans onto the bread, leaving a small gap around the edges. Add a few drops of Worcestershire sauce if using.
- Scatter the grated cheese over the beans on each slice.
- Top with the remaining bread, butter-side up. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and the cheese is melted through.
- Cut in half and serve immediately while hot.
Tips and Variations
Use thick-cut bread so it can hold the filling without going soggy. Add a pinch of smoked paprika or a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the beans for extra depth. No sandwich toaster? A frying pan works fine – just press down firmly with a spatula and flip carefully.
